The original Aman resort, Amanpuri, meaning ‘peaceful place’, is spectacular. The thai style pavillions are secluded, luxurious and beautiful in all aspects. We were very lucky and, due to their annual maintainence, were upgraded to a pavillion in a private villa with it’s own pool and staff. Service was discreet but attentive and every single staff member had a ready smile and a genuine desire to make our stay incredible. If you like, they will unpack and repack for you, drive you around the resort in little buggies at breakneck speed. There is a small private beach and a larger beach partially shared with the Chedi resort next door. The funniest staff members were the guys who were serving down by the beach, always having a laugh while waiting for any requests to fulfil.

Restaurants were pretty good but we would suggest sticking to their Thai menu as the western style food is a bit average, which is surprising for a resort of this calibre. The winged bean spicy salad with shrimp and chicken is definitely one of the best dishes however nothing from the Thai menu would disappoint.

The treatments available in the adjacent Aman Spa are fabulous. The Thai massage is highly recommended. It includes dressing in a loose pajama set and being massaged and stretched gently. Good for woking out the kinks from lying in the sun all day!

The rack rates are quite extortive, something like $680 USD per night for their lowest priced pavillion. That said, they were really fast in coming to fetch the crab that had scuttled into our room one night!
